Metal soaps are metallic salts formed by the action of metals other than alkali metals, metal oxides, or salts and fatty acids, rosin acids, naphthenic acids, etc.
Metal soaps can not be obtained by direct saponification of oils and fats, but are made by the reaction of double decomposition of sodium soap of fatty acids and corresponding metal salts, and by the melting method of fatty acids and metal powder, but the quality is not high. Common metal soap has calcium, magnesium, zinc, lead, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum, barium, cadmium and so on. Generally insoluble in water, most insoluble in ethanol, some soluble in turpentine or solvent gasoline, some dispersed in other organic solvents or drying oils.

It is mainly used in the paint industry and plastics industry, and in the paint industry as a drying agent for oil-based coatings, phenolic coatings and alkyd coatings. In the plastics industry, it can be used as a stabilizer. In addition, it can also be used for the preparation of lubricating grease, water-proofing agent, antiseptic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.
